Chu Jian

Prof Chu Jian is the founding Director for the Centre for Usable Space (now Centre for Urban Solutions). He joined NTU in 1991 after receiving his PhD from The University of New South Wales, Australia. Prof Chu also worked for Iowa State University, USA, from 2011 to 2014 as professor and James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering. Currently, Prof Chu is the President of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore and the Chair for Technical Committee TC217 on Land Reclamation under the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). He is also Editor for a high impact geotechnical journal, Acta Geotechnica, and Associate Editor for ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. He has delivered 60 over keynote and invited lectures at international conferences and published more than 300 technical papers in international journals or conferences.

With more than 30 years’ research and consulting experience, Prof Chu is regarded as an expert in geotechnical engineering in the areas of laboratory and in-situ testing, engineering properties of soils, soil improvement and land reclamation. He received several awards including the R. M. Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society for publishing the best paper in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal in 2004 and the Outstanding Geotechnical Engineer Award from the Geotechnical Society of Singapore in 2018.
