Hear from our intern, Angel De Guzman Bulaon.
Excel-ing in Audit: My Transformative Internship at IPOS
From March to May 2025, I undertook a three-month part-time internship with IPOS Internal Audit, where I gained valuable hands-on experience in public sector internal auditing. My core responsibilities included supporting audit engagements by preparing working papers, conducting data analysis, and creating data visualisations. Additionally, I contributed to audit report preparation which gave me broader exposure to government audit processes.

Armed with Excel as my trusty sidekick, I dove into the world of data preparation and analysis. While Excel might not sound like the most exciting tool in the box, I found creative ways to make it work harder for us. Think of me as the Excel formula whisperer - I developed transferable formulas that turned tedious audit checks into smooth operations. My proudest "aha!" moment? Creating an automated system for checking segregation of duties that could spot when someone accidentally had superhero-level access rights (like being both preparer and approver - a big no-no in audit world!). I also channelled my inner artist by crafting flowcharts to streamline SOPs and drafted audit slides, finding unexpected joy in turning complex processes into clear, visual stories. These small victories in process improvement might not make headlines, but they definitely made our team's daily work more efficient.

Throughout the internship, I developed crucial audit judgement skills, particularly in handling audit observations. Initially cautious about raising minor anomalies, my team's encouraging approach helped me grow more confident in presenting my findings. This supportive environment proved invaluable in developing my professional judgment and analytical capabilities. A significant learning experience came from participating in a quotation evaluation process and creating data visualisation for one of the audit projects. Despite my initial uncertainty, my supervisors guided me through the decision-making process, helping me understand critical considerations in public sector procurement and data visualisation.
For future interns considering IPOS Internal Audit, you'll find yourself working alongside experienced and dedicated auditors who genuinely invest in your professional growth. The team's commitment to knowledge sharing and mentorship creates an invaluable learning environment. Beyond professional development, the inclusive team culture made this internship truly special. Our weekly catch-ups and team celebrations fostered a warm environment, but it was during lunch conversations that I gained some of my most valuable insights. These informal sessions became unexpected mentoring moments, where experienced auditors shared their career journeys and professional wisdom - the kind of priceless knowledge you can't find in any textbook. The supportive environment and meaningful work make this internship an excellent stepping stone for anyone interested in public sector auditing. The guidance and exposure you'll receive here will significantly contribute to your professional journey, making it an opportunity worth pursuing.
