2025 I Information Technology Department: Lim Kian Ian
Hear from our intern, Lim Kian Ian
Powering through my time at IPOS
I participated in a 3-month internship at IPOS under the Information Technology Department (ITD). My role primarily focused on working in Microsoft Power Automate to transform mundane tasks, often prone to user error, into deterministic workflows. During this time, I worked on the following:
IPOS Case Management System: IPOS Customer Service (CS) currently utilises Sharepoint to manage their cases. This system was created in tandem with IT and I was brought on to make some improvements. I helped develop the report generation flow, where at the start of each month the cases for that month get retrieved and processed into a table for CS to create graphs from. Additionally, I helped realise an email integration flow, where certain emails can be discerned and a case created based on the information the email contains and assigns the relevant officers to that case automatically.
Accounts Review Data Processing: There are monthly reviews on the accounts IPOS holds and before I joined most of the checks were still done by hand. Because the requirements for account deletion are provided by clear rules, this process was a good candidate for automation. Hence, I was tasked to develop flows that will collate all the raw data and then apply rules to filter and highlight accounts that are suitable for manual review.
These projects challenged me as these wre novel applications of Power Automate. Hence, a good amount of time was spent problem solving, testing, iterating and working with the relevant departments to ensure that the final product matches expectations.
I was also not stuck in the office for the entire duration of my internship. I managed to participate in the GovTech Automation and AI product showcase on 11 February 2026. While there, I got to interact with the WOG Power Automate community and learn what solutions they have designed within Automate. I also got to see many different AI tools that have been integrated into ministries to improve the operational efficiency.
Moreover, since I joined at the start of the year, there were many company events lined up. The ones that stuck out was the Lo Hei and lion dance in the office to celebrate Chinese New Year and the team bonding activity in March where we had a buffet lunch after a trip to the National Museum.
As such, my time in IPOS has been very fruitful. I am extremely thankful for the ITD team for being welcoming, showing genuine interest in me as a person and giving me the environment to develop both my technical and interpersonal skills.
