What is a Geographical Indication?

It refers to an indication used in trade to identify a product that originates from a particular territory, which has given the product its special quality or reputation. Well-known GIs include:

A glass of wine

Type: Wine, Origin: Champagne

Three shots of alcohol with salt and lime

Type: Spirit, Origin: Tequila

A spread of blue cheese, with figs and walnuts

Type: Cheese, Origin: Roquefort

A cup of tea

Type: Tea, Origin: Darjeeling

Spoonful of black and white peppercorns
