IPOS explores innovation landscape of Israel and Germany

05 Apr 2017 – Chief Executive of IPOS, Mr Daren Tang, recently led a delegation to Israel where the IPOS delegation was warmly received by Director of the Israel Patent Office, Mr Asa Kling. During the two-day visit, IPOS met with representatives from the Israel Innovation Authority, Start-Up Nation Central and two technology transfer offices – Yissum Research Development Company and Ramot. The visits offered insights on the innovation landscape in Israel and opened windows of opportunities for collaborations, such as in the area of patent analytic capabilities.

Following the trip to Israel, Mr Tang led the delegation to Germany where they visited Fraunhofer Society, Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Darmstadt, the delegation saw live demonstrations on virtual and augmented reality, as well as 3D printing technology. The delegation took the opportunity to make a courtesy call on President of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA), Ms Cornelia Rudloff-Schäffer, where both offices explored further cooperation in areas such as the exchange of patent examiners.

One key takeaway was that the research institutes and technology transfer offices in both Israel and Germany were able to attract employees with deep industry experience and IP knowledge. There is a close network between the business development officers, researchers and the industry, which helped researchers understand market demands much better. This translates eventually into patents that have a much higher chance of being licensed.

As an innovation agency, IPOS is grateful for the opportunity to learn from international innovation communities and strives to use its IP expertise and networks to help drive IP commercialisation for Singapore.
