The IPCF comprises 61 competency units that will be developed into competency standards through Working Committees that cover the various sub-sectors. Implementation of the IPCF job families will be phased to take into account the readiness of each sub-sector.
A competency unit describes a particular work role, duty or function, which encompasses the smallest distinct group of skills, knowledge and abilities that can be recognized separately.
Each competency unit is defined and described by a document called competency standard. Typical components of a competency standard include the following:
- Competency Unit
Refers to the title and code for the competency unit.
- Competency Descriptor
Refers to the general description of the competency requirements in the competency unit.
- Competency Level
Refers to the level of complexity and depth of learning required.
- Competency Elements
Refers to the topics to be covered under the competency unit.
- Assumed Knowledge and Skills
Refers to the skills/knowledge that the learner is assumed to have possessed prior to the training.
- Underpining Knowledge Requirements
Refers to the underpinning knowledge that the learner is required to acquire and that may influence how the task is performed.
- Performance Criteria
Refers to what has to be achieved by the learner, through performance, outcomes, evaluative criteria, and other conditions where applicable.
- Range and Context
Refers to the types of circumstances in which the performance criteria apply.
- Evidence Sources
Refers to the supporting information on the type and quality of documentary evidence or observable work activities required to demonstrate competence.
