HIP Alliance Reveals Grand Winner of The Originals IP Champion Camp

Mohammad Shameerul Mirdza and Nurul Nadhirah beats 37 other teams in clinching the prestigious Minister for Law Challenge Trophy in The Originals Intellectual Property (IP) Champion Camp

Singapore, 26 November 2010 – Honour Intellectual Property (HIP) Alliance, the flagship outreach initiative under the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) announced the Grand Winner of The Originals IP Champion Camp today.

2 The three-day camp is the latest outreach project in HIP Alliance’s integrated campaign this year. Targeted at Secondary 2 and 3 students island-wide, the camp is now into its 7th year.

3     The camp, which commenced on 24 November 2010 at Springfield Secondary School, drew attention to clay as a creative medium. In a bid to provide participants with first-hand experience of the hard work that goes into creating IP, participants were invited to exercise their own creativity in creating a clay sculpture in response to a creative brief.

Instilling Knowledge on IP through interactivity

4     At the camp, participants gleaned knowledge about the basics of IP, the creative process and the intricacies of clay sculpture creation through sharings with industry experts. The participants also visited the Trans-Cool TOKYO exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum to gain greater exposure to the world of artistic works. Through the knowledge gained, they created their own sculptures for The Originals IP Champion Camp competition.

5     A panel of judges short-listed the top ten finalists, who proceeded to the next round with 'show-and-tell' presentations in the bid to clinch the top three spots in the competition. The winning teams were assessed based on their depth of thinking and ability to marry inspiration with execution.
Extending the learning experience

6     The learning experience gained would extend beyond the camp. Winning teams will have the honour of showcasing their work in schools, at public places, and through a roving exhibition. Apart from the Minister for Law Challenge Trophy, Mohammad Shameerul Mirdza and Nurul Nadhirah of Team 14, both of whom are from Springfield Secondary School, will also be awarded a two-week internship at Kingsmen Out-of-home Media as Grand Winners. Through the internship, participants would have the opportunity to further enhance their winning clay sculpture using 3D digital rendering technology. With the help of the mentor, their creation will eventually be of industry standard.

7     Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General of Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), said: “We are very excited to bring something different to our participants this year, in demonstration of the multi-faceted nature of IP. However, the objective of the camp remains unchanged. We hope to raise awareness among youths the intricacies associated with every creation of intellectual property. To extend their experience beyond the three days of camp, we have partnered Kingsmen Out-of-Home Media to provide the winning team the opportunity to work directly with the industry experts on enhancing their creations.”

8     David Tay, Director of Kingsmen Out-of-Home Media said: “We are honoured to be part of the HIP Alliance’s educational initiative, as we strongly believe in the importance of instilling respect of IP amongst the young. . This is a small, but significant step towards educating our young and guiding their belief on IP.”
