Peek into your child’s cyber realm – Join us at the World IP Day Seminar

Singapore, 14 April 2009 – What is User Generated Content (UGC)?  How can you guide your children when they enter the realm of UGC sites such as blogs, social networking sites and unique online communities? These are some of the questions that will be answered at the World IP Day Seminar on April 18, 2009.

In celebration of World IP Day on 26 April, the HIP (Honour Intellectual Property) Alliance will once again be organising a half-day public seminar for parents and educators.  The seminar aims to equip them with the necessary knowledge to help guide and pave the way for their children or students as users of UGC sites and as producers of UGC.

The theme for this year’s seminar is What Every Parent Should Know – A Peek Into Your Child’s Cyber Realm.  Supported by the Ministry of Education, the seminar offers insights by practitioners on UGC sites through multi-media exhibits and interactive dialogues.

“With the prevalence of online communities, blogs and social networking sites, the seminar will provide insight to parents and educators on how User Generated Content is changing the children’s online landscape,” said Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.  “We would like parents and educators to be well-informed on how they could guide their children and students in user-generated content without unknowingly committing an act of copyright infringement while creating, browsing and sharing such content.”

At the seminar, the 30-second animation clip created by the 2008 IP Champion (Tan Wiphaporn of Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School), the winner of our Creative Comic Strip Competition in the 2008 IP Champion Camp will also be launched.  This animation clip, based on her winning comic strip, was completed by Wiphaporn during a 2-week internship with a local animation firm.

There will also be a concurrent, dedicated segment for children (aged 7 – 12 years old) who will be introduced to the basics of Intellectual Property (IP). They will discover that IP is in fact all around them in an engaging and interesting way, led by “Detective IP” at the Marina Barrage.

About IP Champion Camp 2008

The IP Champion Camp is an annual 3-day boot camp for secondary students to learn about Copyright and comic illustration techniques. One of the highlights of the camp in 2008 was a Creative Comic Strip Competition for students to apply what they have learnt and create their own 3 – 6 frame comic strip to educate fellow students about Copyright.  The winner won a 2-week internship with a local animation company to create a 30-second animation clip based on her winning comic strip.
