Singapore, 03 September 2009 – The European Patent Office (EPO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) will be organising the Europe Asia Patent and Patent Information Conference (EAP2IC) 2009 from 10 to 11 September 2009.
EAP2IC is an annual event which serves as a platform where leading voices in the IP industry come together to discuss and exchange insights and trends in patent information and IP management. This year’s key focus is on “Building Business Success with IP” and aims to equip companies with the tools to help identify and exploit their IP.
Modern technology has made patent information more easily accessible. The challenge today is how to use this information to gain a competitive edge for businesses. Patent intelligence can help businesses monitor competitors and technology trends, decide on investment strategies and how to get best value out of patent portfolios. In the current economic climate, some may be pressured to trim spending on IP. However, IP Management remains an important element in business strategies. Businesses that continue to invest in building strategic long-term capabilities and stay the course in their management of IP will emerge stronger from this downturn.
“I am confident that business managers will benefit from the insights and experiences in IP management, and in particular the strategic use of patent information, at EAP2IC 2009. These insights will be invaluable, collective global wisdom that will enable businesses to gain the competitive edge that may prove invaluable in the future,” said Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General of IPOS.
EAP2IC 2009 will feature presentations by IP professionals from a range of industry sectors on the first day of the conference and hands-on clinics as well as workshops on the second day.

With IP fast becoming a critical resource in today’s new economy, IPOS’ vision is to foster a creative Singapore where ideas and intellectual efforts are valued, developed and exploited. The mission of the European Patent Office or EPO (www.epo.org) is to support innovation, competitiveness and economic growth for the benefit of the citizens of Europe. Its task is to grant European patents for inventions on the basis of a centralized procedure for the contracting states to the European Patent Convention (EPC). This procedure was signed in Munich on 5 October 1973 and entered into force on 7 October 1977. The EPO is the executive arm of the European Patent Organisation; an intergovernmental body set up under the EPC, whose members are the EPC contracting states. It has its headquarters in Munich and offices at The Hague, Brussels, Berlin and Vienna. With its workforce of nearly 6,600 staff, the EPO is the second-largest intergovernmental institution in Europe after the European Commission.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Geneva, Switzerland. WIPO was established in 1967 with a mandate from its Member States (184 as of today) to promote the protection of Intellectual Property throughout the world through cooperation among states and in collaboration with other international organizations. More information on IPOS can be found on www.wipo.int.
