23 April 2008
– On 26 April 2008, parents, educators and youngsters will gather at the Parents Seminar, to be held at Rock Auditorium, Suntec City Shopping Mall, to celebrate a fun-filled World IP Day!
In celebration of the World IP Day, HIP (Honour Intellectual Property) Alliance is organising this half-day public outreach initiative with support from Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS). HIP Alliance is an initiative of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
The theme for this year’s seminar is “Cyber Dangers: Practice Safe Downloading Parents Seminar”. The goal of the seminar is to equip parents and educators with the necessary knowledge on how to protect themselves and their children against internet risks, such as downloading viruses and worms, and the dangers of online piracy.
For the first time, HIP Alliance has lined up an extra special programme for the first 100 children (7-14 years old), where they too can learn about Intellectual Property (IP) and IP rights in a fun and interactive manner and be guided to create their own IPs. The children will explore the i-Space gallery at the Singapore Science Centre with Detective IP. Through an array of fun and interactive games and contests, IPOS hope to educate and create an awareness of and respect for intellectual property rights (IPRs) among children. At the same time, they will also learn to create their own IPs so that they can better understand what exactly is Intellectual Property (IP) and appreciate that IP is in fact everywhere around us.
Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General, IPOS said, “We have assembled a panel of distinguished speakers in the field who will help guide parents, educators and children on how to surf and use the internet safely. Illegal downloads of music, games and movies and the resulting penalties for copyright infringement are some of the dangers that children, parents and educators may not be fully aware of. Through this second Parents Seminar, we are pleased to continue to reach out and benefit more parents, educators and children with the necessary knowledge to practise safe downloading and be cyber savvy.”
