Singapore, 18 April 2005…Intellectual property (IP) is everywhere around us and each of us can be a successful IP owner. This is the central message that the HIP (Honour Intellectual Property) Alliance, an initiative of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), wants to strike home in this year’s celebration of the World IP Day. The World IP Day falls on the 26th April every year. It is an initiative spearheaded by the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Since the inception of IPOS, Singapore has been observing the celebration of World IP Day. This year, the celebration is made special as the newly established WIPO Singapore Office joins hand with IPOS to commemorate the joyous celebration.
Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General of IPOS commented
“We are pleased to have the Head of WIPO Singapore Office join us in this year’s celebration. With WIPO’s presence in Singapore, we aim to make World IP day celebration a much anticipated annual affair. Starting from this year, the celebration will be engaging, fun and interactive and most importantly, it will raise Singaporeans’ awareness of the value of IP”.
In celebration of World IP Day, the HIP Alliance will kick off with “The REAL Hunt” for all things IP to be held at Wisma Atria on 23 April (Saturday). The event will be officiated by Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore or IPOS is the lead government agency that formulates and regulates Intellectual Property (IP) laws, promotes IP awareness and provides the infrastructure to facilitate the greater development of IP in Singapore. With IP fast becoming a critical resource in today’s new economy, IPOS’ vision is to foster a creative Singapore where ideas and intellectual efforts are valued, developed and exploited. Formerly known as the Registry of Trade Marks and Patents, IPOS was established as a statutory board of the Ministry of Law on 1 April 2001. More information on IPOS can be found on www.ipos.gov.sg.
HIP stands for Honour Intellectual Property. It is IPOS’ key educational initiative to encourage innovation and creativity in Singapore, with strong support from the private sector, public sector and industry associations. HIP aims to promote a positive attitude towards IP and encourages a Pro-IP lifestyle for everyone to ‘Be Creative, Be Original, and Be HIP’. With support from the HIP Alliance members, IPOS intends to motivate the Singapore community to join together to ‘Say No to Piracy’ and support legitimate businesses that create legitimate products and services to make Singapore an IP safe country.
