New HIP Award To Honour Top Local Production at Singapore Film Festival
|
Singapore, Thursday 31 March 2005 – The Silver Screen Awards held in conjunction with the Singapore International Film Festival will be expanded to include a new category this year recognising originality and creativity in local film production.
The Audience Choice – HIP Film Award will be given to the director with the most number of ballots cast by the audience. The award is open to original works that have won past Silver Screen awards. This inaugural award is the first to be given by HIP (Honour Intellectual Property) Alliance, a collaboration of public and private sector organisations formed to promote respect for intellectual property in Singapore. The HIP Alliance is the flagship public awareness initiative of Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
The Silver Screen awards are held annually to encourage excellence among Asian film makers. This year’s event will be held at the Silver Screen Ball on 28th April 2005.
“We are very pleased to be associated with a prestigious event such as the Silver Screen awards. Film makers are innovators who have thrilled and inspired us through their creativity. It is important that we provide them with an environment where their originality can continue to thrive.
“By introducing the Audience Choice HIP award, not only are we encouraging local film directors to continue to innovate, create and take risks, we are also reminding the general public that they too, have a role to play to make this possible. Creativity can only thrive if everyone plays their part to protect original works,” said Ms Liew Woon Yin, Director-General of IPOS.
The HIP award was introduced in 2004 to reward creativity and originality in different fields. The first HIP award was presented at the Power98 Ultimate Band Competition last year.
The Audience Choice – HIP award will be launched on 4th April. A total of 11 short films will air each Monday from 10-11 pm on Arts Central, the official TV station for the Singapore International Film Festival, for a period of four weeks. Viewers will be given the opportunity to cast their vote via SMS. In addition, each vote also entitles viewers to a lucky draw to be conducted weekly. Prizes include one year’s supply of Tiger Beer, sponsored by Asia Pacific Breweries, dining vouchers and tickets to attend the Silver Screen Awards Ball. The grand prize of a Canon Digital IXUS i5 will be given at the end of the four weeks.

Formerly known as the Registry of Trade Marks and Patents, IPOS was established as a statutory board of the Ministry of Law on 1 April 2001. More information on IPOS can be found on www.ipos.gov.sg.
HIP stands for Honour Intellectual Property. It is IPOS’ key educational initiative to encourage innovation and creativity in Singapore, with strong support from the private sector, public sector and industry associations. HIP aims to promote a positive attitude towards IP and encourages a Pro-IP lifestyle for everyone to ‘Be Creative, Be Original, and Be HIP’. Launched in 1987, the Singapore International Film Festival has the following objectives:
- Promote film as an artistic medium
- Provide the opportunity to audiences to view films not otherwise released commercially.
- Create awareness of the finer points of filmmaking through seminars and workshops by overseas professionals
- Pave the way for a Singapore film industry
- Provide an international showcase for Asian Cinema
The Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF) is an annual film event which screens about 300 films from over 45 countries. Besides screening award winning and critically acclaimed films, we also organize workshops, seminars and exhibitions on filmmaking for the film students and the film industry. The Festival is recognized by international film critics for its programming and focus on Asian Cinema and has a platform for new Singapore films and a window to South East Asian films. Many festival programmers and critics attend our Festival to discover new Asian talents. Tributes to the SIFF have been organized by the Cine Vegas Film Festival and the European Institute of Cinema.
To encourage excellence amongst Asian filmmakers, the Festival introduced the Silver Screen Awards Competition in 1991. The Awards have become regionally recognized and Asian filmmakers vie to have their films entered in-competition to gain exposure in world markets. Through the Awards, we have witnessed the success of Singapore filmmakers like Eric Khoo, Sandi Tan and Royston Tan who are recognized internationally.
The SIFF, now entering its 18th year, has attained a most enviable position in the cultural calendar of Singapore and is one of the most eagerly awaited artistic events of the year. The Singapore International Film Festival is a non-profit organization with a charity status and we are privileged to have the support of:
- Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts
- Singapore Film Commission
- Singapore Tourism Board
- National Arts Council
