IP by Students for Students

SINGAPORE, May 31, 2004 –The first ever national Intellectual Property (IP) Camp came to a rousing end today with participants all fired up to share their newly minted learning kits on IP with their school friends. Ms. Liew Woon Yin, Director-General of IPOS officiated at the closing ceremony today marking the culmination of a project which started with a three-day learning journey at Maris Stella High (Primary) School on 17 - 19 March 2004. A total of 16 teams comprising Primary 5 and Primary 6 students participated in the activity which unleashed their creative talents in coming out with teaching resources for their peers.

IP Camp 2004 was an initiative under iperckidz, IPOS' education and outreach programme for primary schools. The Camp not only introduced IP concepts to primary school students, it also made them proud creators of IP in designing and producing learning kits on IP for use back in their own schools. The students were taught storyboarding, presentation techniques and Macromedia Flash so that they could apply these new skills to create their unique IP kits.

This fresh approach of "IP by students for students" is very empowering as it leverages on peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing. This hands-on experiential learning will help raise awareness in and excite pupils about the IP around them. This is also in line with the fundamental shift in curriculum towards practice-oriented learning and project work as schools embrace creativity, innovation and enterprise as essential qualities of their school cultures" said Ms Liew Woon Yin.

Five model IP learning kits were showcased today during the event. These were outstanding projects of students from De La Salle School, Elias Park Primary School, Marymount Convent School, Paris Ris Primary School and CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel. Special awards for Best Graphics, Most Creative Storyboard and Best Presentation were also given out. Participating students are expected to use these kits to share their IP knowledge at their school assemblies in the second half of the year. The five kits will be posted on the iperckidz website and can be downloaded for self-learning by other students (For more details on the five projects, please refer to Annex A (56.5KB).)

As a follow-up activity to IP Camp 2004, a contest will be held where students will be challenged to recruit as many school mates for a new online IP Club as possible. They will be rewarded with cookie points for their efforts and scores awarded based on the frequency of usage of the IP learning kits developed. At the end of challenge, the school with highest number of sign-ups and highest total scores will be awarded prizes.

IPOS also announced e-learning modules will be available on the iperckidz website from Term 3. The modules can be downloaded directly from
