The USSFTA IP Chapter is a key milestone in Singapore’s economic growth strategy. It helps create an advanced regulatory infrastructure that can support the country’s growing knowledge and digital economies.
The IP Chapter provisions cover patents, copyright, trade marks, and even protection of plant varieties. These provisions will strengthen IP protection vital for the growth of Singapore’s specialty industries, such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and info-communications. The enhanced IP regime will help attract more key players in these industries to conduct high value-added activities in Singapore.
As part of the USSFTA IP Chapter, Singapore has committed to ratify or implement the following international agreement
An international treaty that sets new international rules for the protection of copyright works to ensure adequate solutions in the light of technological, social and economic changes.
A WCT-equivalent for the protection of music performances and music recordings.
An international treaty that regulates the unauthorised distribution by third parties of programme-carrying signals transmitted by satellite.
A WIPO instrument that recommends a set of legal principles applicable to the protection of well-known marks.
The objective of the Convention is the protection of new varieties of plants by an intellectual property right.
It provides an international protection mechanism for industrial designs.
