IPOS Shares Madrid Experience At Jakarta Seminar

IPOS recently participated in a seminar entitled "Accession to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks: Benefits and Challenges for Indonesia" in Jakarta, on 24 April 2007.

Organised by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights (DGIPR), Indonesia, as part of their commemoration of the 7th World Intellectual Property Day, the seminar aimed to increase the awareness of the processes, benefits and challenges of the Madrid Protocol among the legal profession, business community and the public. Managed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Madrid Protocol is an international trade mark registration procedure which allows a trade mark owner to protect his trade mark in several countries by filing one application directly with his national office.

Representing IPOS, Mr. Louis Chan, Deputy Director/Legal Counsel (Trade Marks), shared with the Indonesian audience the experiences and challenges faced when Singapore acceded to the Madrid Protocol in October 2000. Other speakers included Mr. Alan Datri, Senior Counsellor from the World Intellectual Property Organization, Mr. Masaru Miroguchi, a specialist from the Japan Patent Office, Ms. Emmawati Junus, the Director of trade marks from DGIPR and Mr. Gunawan Suryomurcito, an IP law practitioner.

Indonesia is studying the possibility of becoming a member of the Madrid Protocol and it is understood that they are likely to do so by the end of 2007 or early 2008. Currently, the Madrid Protocol has 72 members.
