APEC Intellectual Property Experts’ Group Seminar On Using Market Research To Develop Effective IPR Campaigns

This seminar, organized by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) from 12 to 13 December 2007, is the second in a series of three seminars delving into public awareness issues in the intellectual property arena.  The series is a joint Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation - Intellectual Property Experts’ Group (APEC-IPEG) project with IP Australia and the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department.

Mr. Alvin Sim, Deputy Director/Legal Counsel of the Legal Policy and International Affairs Department (LPIAD) shared his thoughts on “On-line Piracy : New Challenges, New Policies from the Singapore Perspective”.  He presented on the role of policy makers, issues and challenges of on-line piracy, the efficacy of Singapore's regime to address such infringing activities and proposed policy considerations to address these activities in the Internet age.

Similar talks were given from the perspective of businesses and industry associations.  As a good majority of APEC economies were represented at the seminar (alongside some industry representatives), this was a strategic opportunity for IPOS to provide thought leadership on the subject.  The seminar was a good platform for member states to share their experiences in  addressing the threat posed by the Internet age to innovation and IP rights.
